BANGUED, Abra -- No traces of a bomb were found in the house of Rep. Cecile Luna after an explosion rocked her residence on Christmas evening injuring a mayor and 10 other persons, including a barangay captain and a policeman.
The explosive and ordnance disposal team which conducted the investigation has found no trace of explosive device in the compound of Congresswoman Luna," said Chief Supt. Eugene Martin, police director of the Cordillera.
Martin was interviewed by this news correspondent over the phone. Earlier, some congressmen in Manila and other political allies of Luna issued statements condemning the explosion despite the fact that police probers have yet to finish their investigation.
"Papano nalaman ng mga congressmen na iyan na binomba nga ang bahay ni Congresswoman Luna, e hindi pa naman tapos ang investigation," said Senior Supt. Alex Pumecha, Abra police director.
The wounded victims included Mayor Jendrix Luna of Lagayan town, Ryan Luna, barangay captain of Dangdangla, both sons of Rep. Luna; another son of the lady solon identified as Cromwell Luna. PO3 Nathaniel Bermudez, driver-security aide of the congresswoman, was also seriously wounded.
The congresswoman who was also in the house during the incident was unhurt.
The seven other wounded victims were all relatives and visitors of the congressoman who were then celebrating the Nativity.
Pumecha said the family of Luna and their visitors were in a festive mood chatting when the house was rocked by loud explosions coming from the solon’s garage.
Quoting witnesses, Pumecha said there was a whistling sound, followed by a projectile that came right into the compound, and followed by loud explosions. Martin said the family of the congresswoman has accepted the findings of the investigators that it was accidental.
The Luna family had stock-piled firecrackers before the incident happened, Martin said.
