DIADI, Nueva Vizcaya – Twelve persons were killed while several others were injured when the mini bus they were riding in fell down a ravine here at Orewong, Nagsabaran around 1 p.m. on April 11.
Police said the bus, with 36 passengers, came from Maddela, Quirino province and was bound to Hungduan, Ifugao. Six persons were killed on the spot while the other fatalities died while being rished to nearby hospitals by Orewong folks who are mostly Ifugao natives. Rescuers brought four vistims to the Veterans Hospital at Bayombong Nueva Vizcaya, two to San Marcos Hospital, Quirino Province, but were declared dead on arrival.
Fifteen were rushed to the De Vera’s hospital at Santiago City, but two were declared dead on arrival, and the following day two others died in the hospital while six who were rushed to to the Javonillo’s hospital, Cordon, Isabela and one at PLT, Bascaran, also in the province expired. Most of the victims suffered fractures, bruises, head and face injuries and internal injuries.
The driver was one of those who died on the spot but the conductor was not injured. The dead victims were brought to the Dos Hermanos Funeral Parlor at Diadi and to the Carbonel Funeral Homes at Cordon, Isabela.
The Ifugao police provincial office under Senior Supt Joseph Adnol with the provincial government office under Gov. Teddy B Baguilat, immediately proceeded to the disaster site after being informed of the incident. Coordination was made with barangay oifficials in the area and Diadi police for safekeeping of the personal belongings of the victims. Hungduan Mayor Pablo Cuyahon also went to the accident site to give assistance and moral support.
To date, four patients are still at the De Vera Hospital two still under ICU, one for major surgery due to severe fracture of the hip bone and one still under observation. Names of the victims were not disclosed at press time.
