FORT DEL PILAR, Baguio City — Maj. Gen. Leopoldo L. Maligalig, superintendent of the Philippine Military Academy has ordered a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the death of Cadet San Ceballos Juanico who reportedly died after a swimming test in the PMA swimming pool in this fort.
Based on initial findings and inquiries with PMA hospital authorities, there was no indication the death of the cadet may have been caused by foul play.
The body will still be subjected to an autopsy at crime laboratory of the Philippine National Police in Camp Bado Dangwa in response to the clamor of his relatives for a thorough investigation.
Juanico, 19, native of Banga, Aklan, was declared dead on arrival by physicians at the PMA Station Hospital at 10:45 a.m. on April 5.
The incident happened while the first year cadets were undergoing a swimming test at the PMA swimming pool.
Cadet Juanico had a seizure and collapsed at 10:25 a.m. while standing in formation and waiting for his classmates to finish the test.
He was immediately brought to the PMA hospital by a medical team that was present at the time of incident.
Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation was immediately administered for 15 minutes by physicians on cadet but to no avail.
Informed of the death of Cadet Juanico, Maligalig immediately relayed the information to AFP chief of staff General Hermogenes C. Esperon.
Juanico belonged to the 315member PMA class of 2012 who were received by PMA authorities and the upper classmen last Arpil 1 during the traditional reception rites held on the Borromeo grounds here.
The PNP crime laboratory is expected to come out with its official autopsy findings in the next few days.
