Baguio City council sets probe: Unscrupulous persons ‘grab’ city terminal lot

By Aileen P. Refuerzo

BAGUIO CITY – The City Council approved a resolution proposed by Councilor Galo Weygan for an investigation into the status of the lot reserved by the city government for its south-bound terminal along Marcos Highway.

Weygan said the lot, situated opposite the Bakakeng Central basketball court, now has several structures put up by unscrupulous individuals.

Weygan earlier sought the probe saying this case of land grabbing deprived the city of its rights over the land necessitating an investigation that would involve the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Department of Public Works and Highways, barangay officials and other persons who may be instrumental in allowing the constructions in the area.

The committee on urban planning, lands and housing chaired by Councilor Isabelo Cosalan Jr. recommended the approval of Weygan’s proposal.

In its report, the committee bared there were several proposed resolutions aiming to expedite the city’s claim over the property.

Other proposals sought the pursuit of the establishment of the south-bound terminal to relocate bus terminals occupying the Governor Pack Road to decongest the central business district.

The latest proposal covering the subject property was a committee resolution No. 001-2007 of the City Land Needs Identification Committee which urges the city council “to cancel the identification of the parcel of land located along Marcos Highway containing an area of 17,802 square meters more or less, as South Bound Terminal and identifying the same for housing purposes of the City Government of Baguio.”
