Fil-Canadians donate goodies to storm victims

By Paul Rillorta

BAGUIO CITY -- Due to last years typhoon which ravaged Luzon, hundreds of Filipinos based in Canada banded together to extend a helping hand to victims.

The Filipino-Canadian Charitable Association of Vaughan through its president Erlinda Insigne donated 150 balikbayan boxes distributed here and neighboring towns of Benguet.

Forty five boxes were handed personally to the Department of Social Welfare and Development Office.

“Upon receipt of photos coming from the city, we immediately contacted Filipino Expartriates in Canada who willingly volunteered to help,” Insigne said.

Baguio’s poorest of the poor and victims of Typhoon Pepeng were targeted recipients of these donations, with some already distributed to various affected barangays.

Councilor Betty Lourdes Tabanda, secretary to the mayor Ronaldo Perez and Yancy Flores, representing the mayor and representatives of FCCAV opened and inspected said boxes.

The donations comprising mainly of clothes, toys, shoes, assorted canned goods and goodies were repacked in smaller plastic bags before being delivered to recipients.

Relief bags were also handed over to residents by city officials during the flag raising ceremony at the city hall grounds last Jan. 11.

Insigne said, cash donations amounting to 11,000 dollars will be handed over to the city government soon.
