BAGUIO CITY – Research studies are now being conducted in select locations within the city for possible eradication of the dreaded dengue carrying mosquito. Initially provided by the Asian Development Bank, mosquito nets to cover large water containers are being distributed by the World Health Organization, the Department of Health, Center for Health Development-Cordillera and the City Health Office in two barangays here.
The Philippines is among three countries chosen for “pilot testing” including Cambodia and Laos.
Kias and Bakakeng barangays were pinpointed sites due to the rise of dengue incidence making it a suitable area to do the research.
The research will be done in a span of one year prove the effectivity or non-effectivity of the nets.
Barangay monitors will be deployed in Kias and Bakakeng to regularly check if the nets are being used.
Representatives from WHO, DOH and the City Health Office will be collecting samples every three months to check if larvae still exists.
Though Mayor Mauricio Domogan is positive the research can contribute to the prevention of dengue, he still believes cleanliness is key to its total eradication.
Among the measures being done by the city health office is a weekly operation taob where barangay residents find and eliminate possible breeding areas of mosquitoes.
Included in this drive are cans, tires and anything that can hold water, even bottle caps.
Operation Yugyug in the other hand is the removal of excess water in plants.
To stop the spread of the Dengue carrying mosquito, the CHO strengthened the Dengue Brigades in barangays and the Little Dengue Brigades in schools tasked to carry out this projects.
The DOH however reiterated fighting dengue is a shared responsibility between the government and the people.
Residents were advised to seek immediate medical attention if signs and symptoms of dengue are observed.
