Baguio water refillers press crackdown vs unlicensed stations

By Ramon Dacawi

The Baguio Association of Purified and Mineral Water Refillers is pushing for more strict requirements to ensure the safety of locally processed drinking or bottled water.

For one, BAPMWR recommended last week mandatory membership to the association as a prerequisite to the city’s issuance of business permit as a safeguard against and to expose and deter those operating without licenses.

Lawyer Nellie Olairez, who was inducted president for the seventh term since the association’s founding seven years ago, said such arrangement would improve the city’s monitoring the quality of drinking water being sold by these commercial outlets.

She bewailed the cut-throat competition from unlicensed refillers who reduce their rates to levels legitimate operators can not go down to lest they would incur losses after tax deductions and costs of maintaining processing quality standards.

She said the membership of city councilor Nicasio Aliping Jr. to the association will heighten the private-government partnership in monitoring compliance of refilling stations to safety standards.

“I was humbled by (this fresh mandate),”Olairez said, recalling she asked the councilor to lead the organization but Aliping, who recently opened his water refilling plant, declined.

Aliping said he will study the practicality of making membership to the association as a prerequisite for the licensing and renewal of permits of water refilling stations.

Olairez headed association officers who were inducted by city health officer, Dr. Florence Reyes, last June 25 at the Prince Plaza Hotel, with Aliping as vice-president.

Reyes cited the members who “always make themselves available” in supporting health and community programs such as the recent KARADKAD fun and health run that drew 600 participants.

As part of their continuing education program, the members had Mike Liwanag, sales and marketing manager of Unique International Export Co., as resource speaker on the latest trends in the industry in a forum before the induction.

Other officers are Eliza Banagan –secretary, Estrella Dangla – treasurer, Leonila Endrano – asst. secretary, Teresitat Estacio – asst. treasurer, Jose Dipasupil – auditor, David Abad – press relations officer, and Nelson de Ayre and Engr. Florencio Cardenas – business managers.

The board is composed of lawyer Zosimo Abratique, Alejandro agpes, Moses Co, Luzviminda Onia and Peter Saguilot Jr.
