Veggie prices down due to oversupply

By Dexter A. See

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet— The supply of vegetables in this province increased significantly with farmers opting to harvest early to beat the entry of typhoons, resulting in an oversupply that has led to a drop in the prices of vegetables in the trading post last week.

Aside from supposed oversupply of vegetables in the town’s major trading facility, traders from Metro Manila and the lowlands have also reduced the volume of their purchase due to decline in demand.

As an example, traders who usually buy 11 tons of assorted vegetables have reduced their purchase to merely 5 tons or a significant decline of more than 55 percent.

Agriculture stakeholders here claimed farmers are not getting expected profits during the rainy and typhoon seasons because consumers in the lowlands prefer to buy canned and processed products during the rainy days since the same would last compared to the highly perishable vegetables.

Because of the current scenario, farmers in the province are now at a loss where to get a substantial income to sustain the livelihood of their respective families.
