14 abused Abra farmers rescued in Malaysia

By Dexter A. See

BANGUED, Abra — Fourteen farmers from this province who were allegedly abused by their employers in Malaysia were rescued recently, the Overseas Filipino Workers Center here reported Tuesday.

Except for one, allvictims were brought back to the Philippines through the “back door” as they would not be repatriated as all their travel documents were found to be spurious, said OFW Center officer-in-charge FredelinaBeato.

She said the 14 farmers were victims of illegal recruitment and taken to Malaysia to work under harsh conditions – given no food, water or other provisions; no sickness benefits; and no-work-no-pay arrangement.

Concerned Malaysian authorities helped rescue the group, but since the farmers had no travel documents, there was no speedy way of repatriating them under the legal system, said Beato.

“It was providential that we were able to seek the help of the Malaysian Embassy (in Manila) to bring back the Abrenian farmers through the ‘back door,’ because they had entered Malaysia illegally,” she said.

Beato said one opted to stay behind as he had a relative in Malaysia who would help him land a better job.

The farmers are now in Zamboanga City under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development Office there for proper documentation and debriefing.

“Soon they will travel back to this province to reunite with their families,” said Beato.
