Thousands of tourists mob Repazzo de Vigan

VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur --Thousands of local and foreign tourists flocked to the main streets in this heritage city to watch “Repazzo de Vigan” where cultural and local dances were presented to reminisce the past.

The dance and parade were one of several events readied by the city administration of Mayor Eva Marie S. Medina in this year’s weeklong celebration of the United Nations Educational and Scientific Cultural Organization Word Heritage Cities Solidarity Day and Cultural Festival from Sept. 3 to 10.

Medina who led the cultural festival said “Repazzo de Vigan” is was aboutthe history of Ciudad de Vigan from the pre- colonial Spanish period until the modern times.

Medina said the event was actually being celebrated World wide. It was organized by UNESCO and the World Heritage Cities Solidarity on Sept. 8, 1993 in Fez, Morocco.

Vigan is known site of the centuries’ old heritage structures that were preserved by the city, making it a major attraction in the North. Vigan’s well-preserved Spanish trading city had survived the bombings during World War II and prompted the city government to come up with an ordinance where the people of Vigan were advised to do their share in preserving the old structures, among others.

Among significant highlights of the festival were folk dances and sports contests, Sabayang Pagbigkas, daniw, dallot and Zarsuela presentations; hisotoria oral; vocal solo, vocal duet, kinnantaan and vocal chorus; Eucharistic celebration, solidarity breakfast, solidarity medical and dental mission and cultural show.

“Babaeng Digmaan” was also presented at Meralco Theater in Pasay City to showcase the power of love by the Biguenos that saved Vigan from the wrath of the Japanese Imperial Army during the WWII.

A top official of the Japanese Imperial Army was reportedly in love with a beautiful lady of Vigan that prompted him to spare the city from further bombings sand destruction during World War II.
