DPWH hit after rock hits van; 1 killed, another hurt

BONTOC, Mountain Province – Provincial constituents and motorists assailed the Department of Public Works and Highways for not constructing preventive measures to stop roadslides and installing warning signs.

This, after an employee of RGMA Network Incorporated based at Barlig town in the province died instantly while another passenger was injured when rocks fell down a mountain here along the Halsema Highway at Barangay Gonogon here Oct. 1 at about 10:30 a.m. while Typhoon “Quiel” was raging.

“Many years have passed but it is still the same and accidents still happen in the area,” loudly said a commuter while passing the area inside a bus. “Where did the millions in taxpayer’s money go to rehabilitate what the DPWH called a comprehensive rehabilitation of the Halsema Road?

A police report identified the dead victims as Jammas Pelito Marcos, 34 of Cotcot, Bangao, Buguias, Benguet and employed with RGMA Network Incorporated.

Injured was Melody Gomez, 22, single, of Maba-ay, Bauko, Mountain Province.

A Bontoc police investigation report said the victims were on board a Blue Hyundai Grace Van bearing plate number: BDN - 232 bound for Abatan 90 from Bontoc when the accident happened.

The van was owned and driven by Leonard Fagyan Liwanag, 43,native of Talubin, Bontoc, and presently residing at Sadsadan, Bauko, Mt. Province.

The driver temporarily stopped and parked his vehicle beside the National Highway and afterwards alighted from the vehicle and cleaned the debris and mud that was blocking their way when suddenly a big boulder fell down the mountainside hitting directly the left portion of the vehicle.

As a result Jammas Pelito Marcos was hit on the head causing his instant death due to skull fracture while Gomez sustained contusion on her right knee.

Both victims were immediately rushed to Bontoc General Hospital where Gomez is still confined while the body Pelito was later brought home to his residence by his relatives.
