The yuletide season in just around the corner with radio stations playing Christmas carols, but then, it seems, people feel lonely and eager at the same time in welcoming the birth of Jesus Christ.
The loneliness emanates from bleak economic times. People are wondering where to get the goodies for noche Buena. This early, shrewd entrepreneurs are trying to make business ,through irregular means, out of a holy periodwherein all things good and holy should be the norm.
They are even selling substandard items like Christmas lights and firecrackers which have been known to have started fires and rendered many a family homeless.
Government authorities are advising the public to have these items tested first before these are draped or exploded. But we wonder where such tests could be done. Where are representatives of the Bureau of Product Standards, supposedly the agency in charge of this?
Toys, whether cheap or expensive have also been known to cause harm to children due to their toxic elements. People want value for their money like in buying things for the yuletide season, but then, such products should be safe for use or consumption, otherwise, their health of lives could be compromised.
Meanwhile, criminal elements, those in government too, according to reports, are up and about earning money through illegal means to enjoy the season like going to expensive vacation sites like Boracay.
For the moneyed, it is another season to enjoy “blessings.” For the poor, it is another season to bear with hard times. Life had never been fair, even during the Christmas Season. Call it irony.
