Pampanga governor orders probe of jail hostage drama

SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga– Gov. Lilia “Baby” Pineda has ordered an investigation of the hostage drama at the Pampanga provincial jail here.

Pineda asked retired Senior Supt. Edwin Mangaliman, provincial jail warden, to explain how suspect WilfedroLorilla, 37, who took another inmate hostage, was able to bring in a knife inside his detention cell.

She also sought an explanation from the jail guards, saying they could have been remiss in their duties.

The provincial jail is under the management of the provincial government.

Senior Supt. Edgar Tinio, Pampanga provincial director, said Jonathan Miranda of San Simon town remains in critical condition after he was stabbed by Lorilla, who took hostage fellow inmate Bernardo Narciso for 13 hours on Nov. 4.

Another inmate who jumped from the second floor of the jail building during the hostage drama also suffered leg fractures, Tinio said.

Tinio said Lorilla ended the hostage drama after a talk with his sister, Jane LorillaTabunda, who came all the way from San Carlos, Pangasinan.

Before he took fellow inmate Bernardo Narciso hostage, Lorilla stabbed and wounded another inmate, Jonathan Miranda, who was in critical condition at Jose B. Lingad Memorial Hospital due to a heart problem, Tinio said.

Tinio said Lorilla was emotionally disturbed because no relatives had visited him at the provincial jail since he was locked up last May.

Tinio said Lorilla was arrested last May for an attempted murder case in Mexico town.
