BAGUIO CITY – The city government is set to investigate illegal tree cutting activities
here despite absence of permits issued by the Department of Environment and
Natural Resources.
This, after a resolution was introduced by Councilor
Elmer Datuin unanimously by the city council based on reports that applicants
who have pending requests for tree cutting permits with the DENR have actually
started cutting trees despite non-issuance of documents.
“The report is alarming as some sectors are now resorting
to illegal practice which may lead to uncontrollable tree cutting activities in
the city,” Datuin said.
Several pine trees were earlier removed from
road-widening projects in the city despite absence of tree cutting permits
which have caused public uproar.
Datuin said the probe was needed to enable the city
government enact legislative measures in protecting the general welfare of
constituents and the environment.
Mayor Mauricio Domogan has strengthened the process of
issuing “emergency tree cutting permits” for trees which pose imminent danger
to life and property.
The mayor included representatives of the City
Environment and Natural Resources Office of the DENR to be part of the city’s
inspection and investigation committee.
Domogan said it is this time of the year when his office
receives a bulk of requests for emergency tree cutting permits especially when
there are typhoons.
The mayor clarified however that emergency tree cutting
permits only covers trees that pose danger to life and property.
