Cordillera police stations undergoing ‘face lift’
CAMP DANGWA, La Trinidad, Benguet - The 56 police stations in the Cordillera region will have a better look by the end of this year with the release of the P18,450,000 from the Department of the Interior and Local Government and another P5,757,075 from the Philippine National Police fund for  construction of new buildings.

Chief Supt. Isagani Nerez, Cordillera police director, said this was in line with "Oplan Dignity" of the PNP with  DILG Secretary Mar Roxas as part of the P170 million budget to make police stations nationwide look presentable.

“As we pursue personnel development for our personnel, our services can be improved further with the construction and repainting/repair of our police stations that will boost the morale of our personnel,” Nerez said.

This  year, 3 buildings were built; one in Abra Provincial Laboratory Office, two in Ifugao; Kiangan and Tinoc MPS.

There are four ongoing constructions  -- two   in Abra; Dolores and Malibcong, one in Kalinga; Tanudan and one in Paracelis, Mt. Province.

Fifty six municipal police stations are now undergoing repair/repainting and are expected to be finished by the end of the year.

Bontoc town women’s brigade receive patrol kits
BONTOC, Mountain Province --The Bontoc Women’s Brigade received on June 16 new patrol kits from the Police Regional Office-Cordillera.

The kits included 50 pieces each of flashlights, whistles, and handcuffs.

The 44 members of the brigade received the items from Senior Supt. Oliver Enmodias, director of the Mountain Province Police Provincial Office the Bontoc town hall grounds.

Enmodias, who turned over the equipment in behalf of regional police office , said batons will also be given to the brigade, but only after proper training had been conducted for members.

Mayor Franklin Odsey said he requested the supplies from Cordillera police director Chief Supt. IsaganiNierez when the latter came for a visit in Bontoc on May 26.

Prior to the request, the brigade had been using personal flashlights when they did nightly patrol.

Odsey expressed gratitude for the director’s quick response on the matter, adding that the grant to the women’s brigade is well-deserved. “Over the years, these brave women have shown how important community involvement is in the maintenance of peace and order in our community,” he said.

The women’s brigade is now on its 12th year of existence after its organization in 2002 by former vice mayor and now Board Member Florence Taguiba, then councilors Caroline Castañeda and Josefa Aspilan, and Winifred Ananayo.

It had been actively helping municipal police maintain peace and order by ensuring that town’s ordinances mandating a 9 p.m. curfew for minors and 10 p.m. liquor ban for business establishments are strictly implemented.
The members conduct nightly patrols together with the Bontoc police around the four central barangays.

The brigade’s good track record has inspired nearby towns, like La Trinidad in Benguet, to organize their own women’s brigades also for peacekeeping purposes.

The Bontoc Municipal Police Force recognize the great help the women’s brigade has been extending to their peacekeeping and crime prevention efforts, especially considering that most injury-causing incidents in the central barangays are alcohol-related. -- Desiree Sokoken
