WB loan to be used to rehabilitate roads

PUGO, La Union – Through a loan from the World Bank (WB) granted to the Department of Agriculture (DA), the Balecbec-Basca Farm to Market Road (FMR) and Balecbec Bridge will soon be rehabilitated.

The FMR road and bridge will benefit farmers in the far-flung and mountainous barangay of Balecbec in Naguilian,

La Union who have to walk around four kilometers on rough, unpaved roads to bring their products to the provincial road, where tricycles are available.

It gets more complicated for those traveling with heavier loads, wherein they have to hire a “pasagad” or a carabao-drawn wooden sleigh for P100 per sack.

However, before Gov. Manuel C. Ortega’s administration ends, and with the help of the DA, their lives are soon to change.

The new almost-eight kilometer world-class road and 30 linear meter bridge—which is a Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP) project–will also directly benefit the Municipality of Aringay as the FMR transverses all the way to Barangay Basca.

Businessmen are expected to soon come to the area to buy products, especially mangoes, and will add to increased production and profit.
