By Freddie G. Lazaro

LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte – The Regional Development Council once again named this city, along with San Fernando City in La Union, as the cleanest, greenest and safest in the entire Ilocos region.

RDC Vice-Chairman Nestor G. Rillom said the search is an annual program aimed at giving importance and recognition to the contribution of the different local government units (LGUs) in the protection, management and promotion of clean, safe and peaceful environment.

The RDC has conducted a series of evaluations and ocular inspections in various local governments in Region 1, with a particular interest in environmental management, public safety, and peace and order.

Following a series of evaluations, Laoag City ended up in a tie with San Fernando City, La Union under the component city category.

Laoag City government officials, headed by Association of Barangay Chairmen president Mikee Fariñas received the award in simple rites at Hotel Ariana in Bauang, La Union.

Laoag City likewise won the title as cleanest, safest, and greenest component city last year.

The city also earned the distinction and recognition for three consecutive years from 2000 to 2002.

Meanwhile, the towns of Bacarra and Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte and Laoag City were also awarded with certificates of appreciation in recognition of its commitment to coastal resources management planning, significantly contributing to the sustainable development of Ilocos region’s coastal and marine resources.
