NUEVA ECIJA -- Mary Jane Veloso, who remains
on death row in Indonesia, turned 31 last Jan 10 with her relatives and
supporters celebrating in this province and migrant rights activists calling
for her to be absolutely saved from the death penalty.
Veloso’s execution was
temporarily put on hold by the Indonesian government nine months ago to give
her legal team in the Philippines ample time to prove that she was used by a
drug syndicate and not a part of it when heroin was found in luggage at the
airport in Yogyakarta.
Yesterday, her mother
and two children were set to fly to Indonesia and visit her in jail as calls
for her to be saved from the death penalty grows louder.
Prior to their
departure, they were joined in Nueva Ecija by supporters of Veloso who
expressed their “continued support and commitment to save” her from execution,
said Connie Bragas-Regalado of Migrante party-list, one of the groups
supporting the overseas Filipino worker (OFW).
She said that there is
a reason to celebrate Veloso’s birthday since it symbolizes a new chapter of
her life after her temporary reprieve, adding that it is also reason for
continued vigilance and renewed vigor to save her life.
Regalado said that
masses and prayers were offered for Veloso’s cause at the Baclara nRedemptorist
Church and by the Church Task Force to Save Mary Jane.
Veloso was visited
last week by her mother and two kids in her Indonesian jail in a trip arranged
by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
The family was
accompanied by Veloso’s Filipino lawyer Edre Olalia and Migrante members.
