Mountain Province cops commemorate valor day with vets

BONTOC, Mountain Province -- Police officers of Mountain Province Police Provincial Office commemorated “Araw ng Kagitingan” themed: “Kagitingan ng mga beterano, inspirasyon ng nagkakaisang Pilipino” here at Veterans Memorial Park, Provincial Plaza on April 9.
    The activity was attended by police, veterans, widows and spouses of veterans, Philippine Army, ROTC cadets and criminology interns of Mountain Province State Polytechnic College.
    The program was highlighted by a wreath-laying ceremony led by Mayor Franklin Odsey, provincial police director Col. Ruben B. Andiso and veterans Laurence Pangod, Pio Kidpo and Paulo Pagteilan.
    A 21-gun salute and sounding of Taps were also observed to honor the valor and the sacrifices of Filipino war veterans and patriots.
    In Paracelis town, police visited the lone known survivor of World War 2 in the municipality -- Andres B. Wanason, a 103-year old veteran.
    They also offered candles and prayers at the tomb of veteran Placido Cabacsan.
    In Natonin town, police visited and gave assorted groceries to 97-year-old World War II veteran Wangchan Gatao Tawaran of Barangay Butac.
    The Day of Valor, officially known as Araw ng Kagitingan, is a national observance in the Philippines which commemorates the fall of Bataan to Japanese troops during World War II.
    By virtue of executive order 203, s. 1987, April 9 of every year is Araw ng Kagitingan.
    Proclamation 466, s. 1989  designated April 5 to 11 of every year as Philippine Veterans Week to “promote, preserve and memorialize the principles, ideals, and deeds of the Filipino war veteran as a means to enhance patriotism and love of country, especially among the youth of the land.”
