Cops probing La Union explosions

BY JERRY PADILLA AND MYDS SUPNAD

SAN FERNANDO, La Union – The police and military are investigating a series of bombings which rocked this city.

The lawmen beefed security for Saturday’s oath-taking of the newly elected officials to the province following the recent spate of explosions.

Chief Supt. Leopoldo Bataoil, Ilocos regional police director, deployed a bomb squad to prevent any untoward incidents during the oath-taking.

On June 27, a painter who works for the city government was injured when an improvised explosive device went off more than 100 meters away from the city Hall before noon that day.

This was the second explosion this month in this city and barely a week after an improvised bomb rocked the Marcos building which houses the offices of the city council and several departments.

Two other unexploded bombs were also recovered recently.

Hipolito Aragon, an employee of the engineering department, suffered shrapnel wounds on different parts of his body and was rushed by traffic enforcers to the city health office for treatment.

He was later transferred to the Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center.

Aragon was riding a bicycle for home from City Hall when the explosion occurred at the corner of Tavera and P. Burgos streets.

Senior Supt. Franklin Jesus Bucayu, said the blast also destroyed a sari-sari store and the glass window.
