VIGAN CITY – Rep. Ronald V. Singson (1st district – Ilocos Sur) bared the airport of this country’s “world heritage city” will soon be widened to fit the standards for commercial and international flights.
This developed after Singson requested P250 million from the budget of the Department of Transportation and Communications to upgrade the facilities of the airport.
The inclusion of the said amount in the DOTC budget next year was worked out by Singson and House Deputy Speaker Eric D. Singson (2nd District-Ilocos Sur) during the recently concluded deliberations in Congress.
“With the expansion of our airport, we will be able to make our province more accessible for commercial flights and more convenient visiting businessmen and tourists in our province as well as our balikbayans, who are not only from Ilocos Sur but also from Abra province,” Singson said.
“The usual 8 to 10-hour travel time by land from Manila to Vigan will be reduced after the upgrading the area and facilities of our airport,” he added.
At present, the length of the runway of Vigan airport, which is located at Barangay Mindoro, is only 8090 meters and is suitable only for small planes. The upgrading program of the airport consists of two phases of implementation.
