MORE NEWS, BAGUIO CITY

Death of lady preacher a mystery to policemen
By Dexter A. See

BAGUIO CITY — Cops are now probing how a lady preacher died unexpectedly of “natural causes” while her husband almost suffered the same fate had it not been for the timely arrival of policemen at their residence in Barangay Gibraltar here.

Chief Supt. Eugene G. Martin, director of the Police Regional Office in the Cordillera, identified the lady preacher as Karen Esponilla Mandaguio, 49, married, minister, of San Antonio, Northern Samar, who was temporarily residing at 292 Purok 4, East Gibraltar, Baguio.

Her husband was taken by a police team to the Baguio General Hospital after he was observed having a hard time breathing. He was not identified.

The couple’s daughter, Sharon, said she arrived home and knocked on the door of her parents’ bedroom to greet them, but no one answered.

This prompted her to open it. Entering the bedroom, she found out that her father was trying to catch his breath, while her mother was already cold and motionless.

She immediately sought assistance from the police.

Arriving at the scene, police operatives took the man to the BGH where he was treated. He was later taken to the medical ward for observation.

The probers examined the bedroom for clues in an effort to find out what happened. They said they found no sign of struggle or external injury on the preacher’s body.

Ordinance proposed on ‘deceiving’ market lights
By Julie G. Fianza

BAGUIO CITY-The city council during its session last week approved on first reading the proposal of Vice mayor Daniel Farinas penalizing the use of “deceiving lights” on fresh produce at the city’s public market.

According to Vice Mayor Farinas, there have been complaints received from market goers that such lights have been installed to mask the appearance of meats, fishes, fruits and vegetables, making it appear fresh and appealing to unsuspecting buyers.
It is only when the goods are out in the open that blemishes or defects are found out.

This has been the practice of “unscrupulous stall tenders and owners,” he added, thus the proposed ordinance to “put a check to and prevent such sinister practice from persisting.”

Only flourescent lighting should be used by all stall tenders and owners in the Baguio City Public Market, including all public and private markets in the barangays, and all stores, malls, and establishments, the vice mayor stated in his proposal.

Penalty of P500, P1,000 and P2,000 with revocation of permit to operate business shall be meted out to violators for the first, second, and third offense, after prior inspection and apprehension for non-compliance, once the ordinance is approved and deemed effective.
