Diarrhea outbreak downs 62 persons in Benguet village

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet — The provincial government asked barangay residents to be cautious about the water they drink with the onset of the rainy season.

This developed after 62 persons were hospitalized due to a diarrhea outbreak in Barangay Bineng, La Trinidad, Benguet. They reportedly drank water during burial rites.

Of the 62 persons downed by diarrhea, 23 were hospitalized, and 30 others were out-patients. The nine others were immediately cured.

Health authorities were forced to conduct an investigation of the outbreak due to the increasing number of diarrhea patients being admitted in the Benguet General Hospital several days ago. Initial results of the investigation conducted by the provincial and municipal heath offices showed that the patients attended interment rites in Barangay Bineng.

Most of the victims reportedly came from the seven sitios of the 11 sitios of the barangay.

Moreover, two residents of Sablan town who also attended the burial were also confined in BeGH for diarrhea. The team found out that the Alumit creek, where a pipe is connected to the dead person’s house was allegedly positive for E.coli, as shown by the bacteriological analysis of the water samples taken from the creek. -- Dexter See
