CHED okays teaching of autonomy in Cordi colleges

By Dexter A. See

BAGUIO CITY – Autonomy as a subject would be taught in Cordillera colleges after the Commission on Higher Education said the module is ready for distribution in different schools in the region.

Dr. Freddie Bernal, Cordillera CHED director, said the autonomy concept will be incorporated into the college subject called National Service Training Program (NSTP). This would provide the youth with broader knowledge on the essence of regional autonomy.

The inclusion of the teaching of autonomy in the elementary, secondary and tertiary curricula is part of the plan for an enhanced information, education and communication campaign launched by the Regional Development Council (RDC) in the Cordillera.

The campaign is intended to improve the awareness by Cordillerans of the struggle for self-governance through the establishment of an autonomous region.

The RDC said autonomy is a tool to speed up development in the countryside through control of the environment and resources.

Bernal said the teaching of the autonomy concept on the tertiary level is not intended to influence the youth to favor the quest for self-governance but it is aimed at providing them with a broader picture of the autonomy issue. This is expected to help them come out with an independent assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of an autonomous setup.

Meanwhile, the Department of Education (DepEd) has finalized its version of the teaching module for the elementary and secondary schools in the region.
