33 teams vie in Dagupan's 'Festivals of the North'

DAGUPAN CITY– People are expected to crowd major streets here at noon today to watch the biggest-ever parade of street dancers who will compete in the “Festivals of the North,” one of the highlights of the city’s ongoing Bangus Festival.

Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, who chairs the Bangus Festival, said that it’s all systems go for the 33 competing groups representing their respective local festivals. Last year, only 17 teams competed.

“We hope the good Lord will give us fine weather during this event although in the past, we had experienced rains during this same event yet the spirit of the participants and spectators wasn’t dampened,” she said.

Vying for the top award in the municipal category are Balungao, Bayambang, Binmaley, Calasiao, Infanta, Manaoag, Pozzorubio, Sta. Maria, San Nicolas, Santo Tomas, Umingan, Urbiztondo, Villasis, Malasique, all in Pangasinan; Agoo, Bauang, Naguilian, and Sto. Tomas, all in La Union; Paoay, Pinili, Pagudpud, and San Nicolas, all in Ilocos Norte; Candaba and Mabalacat in Pampanga; Aliaga in Nueva Ecija and Masinloc in Zambales.

In the city category, the competing teams come from Dagupan, Alaminos, San Carlos, all in Pangasinan; Angeles in Pampanga; San Fernando in La Union; Laoag in Ilocos Norte; and Santiago in Isabela.

Winners will bring home P200,000 for the champion; P100,000, first runner-up; P75,000, second; P50,000, third; and P30,000, fourth, plus trophies. The Best in Costume winner will get P20,000.

Last year’s champion, the Pandan Fesival street dancers of Mapandan, Pangasinan, will be the guest performer, together with the Dinagyang Festival contingent.

The Bangus Festival kicked off last April 16 and will end on May 1.
