260 cops pulled out from Abra peacekeeping force

CAMP DANGWA, La Trinidad, Benguet – Because of the significant gains of law enforcers in sustaining honest, peaceful and orderly elections in Abra, the leadership of the Police Regional Office in the Cordillera started to pull out at least 260 policemen earlier detailed in the different parts of Abra to prevent the occurrence of politically-motivated violence during the elections.

The law enforcers which came from the Baguio City Police Office, Benguet provincial police office and some companies of the Regional Public Safety Maneuver Battalion started to leave the province after the heightened alert was downgraded to a lower level after the canvassing of votes in the municipal and provincial levels have been partially completed.

Except for results from Tineg town which are being questioned, most of the municipal candidates in the 27 municipalities have already been proclaimed while Gov. Eustaquio Bersamin was also proclaimed as the winner in the gubernatorial race.

Chief Supt. Villamor Bumanglag, regional police director, cited the accomplishment of the law enforcers in significantly reducing politically-motivated violence in the province.

Over 1,000 additional law enforcers have been deployed in the province two weeks before the elections which sent a message to the feuding politicians that there is no room for them to pursue their evil desire to wreck havoc just to advance their own personal and political interests.

For his part, Chief Supt. Samuel B. Diciano, PRO-COR deputy regional director for administration, cited the peace and order that reigned in Abra during the elections showed how democracy worked to the fullest to the best advantage of the people who have been longing for lasting peace.

Based on records, election-related incidents during the current election period was the lowest in the history of Abra with only three that resulted to one death.

In the 2004 elections, Abra registered 32 election-related incidents with 17 deaths while there were 19 incidents that were committed in the different parts of the province which caused the death of 28 individuals.

Bumanglag claimed the pullout of the augmentation force in the province will not mean that the PNP is relaxing its security measures considering that all the existing police and military checkpoints will still be maintained. -- Dexter A. See
