BSU mentors get 5 awards in three research confabs

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Benguet State University researchers bagged five awards in three different research conferences bringing honor to the University.

During the “International conference on higher education research” held at Vigan, Ilocos Sur, on April 28 to May 1, the paper “Benchmarking on the use of instructional media among teachers in teacher education institutions in the Cordillera Administrative Region,” by Percyveranda A. Lubrica, Manolita N. Alvaro, Janet Lynn S. Montemayor, Evelyn S. Angiwan, Arnulfo C. Capili, Divina M. Yango, Angel C. Cawat, Victor P. Singa, and Carlos P. Lumaang bagged first place as “Best publishable paper in education researches.”

The paper found out instructional technologies are available among SUCs in the Cordillera but it is not fully utilized because although teachers have a positive attitude towards instructional technology, they lack the skills and knowledge in bridging technology and pedagogy in teacher education.

In the same conference IHFSA director, Valentino Macanes placed third in the search for the “Best oral presentation” under the “Best practices category” with his presentation, “The Arabica coffee-pine based agroforestry farming system: A technology for watershed conservation and people’s livelihood in the Cordillera Administrative Region.”

The presentation related how the agroforestry technology of planting Arabica coffee under the pine trees developed by BSU researchers has given additional income to farmers and helped conserve a watershed, control soil erosion and water runoff, promoted biodiversity and the practice of organic agriculture.

The R&D Management Paper “STVRDC: A model on “Best practices in R&D management,” by Luciana M. Villanueva, Darlyn D. Tagarino, Lorenza G. Lirio, Asuncion L. Nagpala, and Leoncia L. Tandang won first place during the 20th Philippine Association of Research Managers Convention in Aklan State University last April 8.

Likewise, STVRDC director, Luciana M. Villanueva was awarded “Outstanding research manager” during the same convention.

Office of Extension Services director, Silvestre Kudan was also awarded the Crop Science Society of the Philippines Achievement Award in Crop Science Extension during the CSSP 40th Annual Scientific Conference and Anniversary at the Grand Regal Hotel, Davao City last March 15-20. Kudan’s extension work started in 2009 when he was designated as Extension Director and anchorperson of Benguet

State University’s radio program “BSU on the Air” and the Boses ti Farmer’s over DZWT, Baguio City. He has written several seven production guides of individual vegetable crops and 27 articles on various aspects of crop production. He served as resource person/lecture in 53 farmer’s trainings and seminars across the Cordilleras.

He has been a technical evaluator in five agency reviews. -- /JSTabangcura and
