By Mhars B. Lihgawon

HINGYON, Ifugao- Candidates vying for local elective positions in this town recently signed a peace covenant to ensure orderly elections in May.

The event at Hingyon municipal gym was witnessed by supporters and officials of the municipal government, police, Commission on Elections and the poll watchdog, Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting.

The covenant said candidates should refrain from vote buying and imposing violence or threat that would destroy the power and freedom of choice of the voting populace.

Furthermore, candidates should not initiate any political violence that would lead to the destruction of lives and property in the municipality.

During the campaign period, the covenant stated that each candidate would conduct campaign in accordance with the law and the rules in the spirit of good grace and friendly rivalry.

The candidates pledged they will participate in candidates forum to be called by non-partisan multi-sectoral groups in the community with the support of the Commission on Elections to debate or explain their campaign platforms and position on relevant national and local issues.

The peace covenant is expected to ensure peaceful and orderly elections in Hingyon which it had consistently maintained for the past election years with the help and cooperation of the community.
