LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – A Balik Scientist here has taught villagers living in several communities in the Cordillera to identify landslide-prone areas through practical hazard assessment procedures devised to instill public awareness on geohazard areas in the highlands.
The study on the crafting of the hazard assessment procedures was undertaken by engineer Daniel Peckley, a Balik Scientist now working with the Department of Science and Technology, who worked on the development of a non-expert tool for site-specific evaluation of rain-induced landslide susceptibility.
The project was undertaken by the DOST, in coordination with the Regional Development Council in the Cordillera, as part of the climate change and disaster risk reduction advocacy of concerned government agencies and local governments. – Dexter See
