Baguio churches join World Week of Prayer

By Maurice Malanes

BAGUIO CITY – Roman Catholic, Protestant, Evangelical and Pentecostal churches and fellowships in Baguio have set aside doctrinal differences and would join the rest of Christendom in participating in a worldwide “Week of Prayer and Unity.”

Slated on January 16 to January 21, this year’s week of prayer is inspired by a letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians, which said, “We shall be transformed because of the victory of Christ Jesus, our Lord (1 Cor. 15:51-58),” according to Rev. Joie Galinato, a Methodist pastor and president of the Baguio-Benguet Ecumenical Group.

The first hosts are the United Church of Christ in the Philippines and Yeshwa Set-free Fellowship and the prayer activity starts 5:30 p.m. on January 16 at the UCCP-Baguio, Westside of Burnham Park.

The Episcopal Church in the Philippines and Bukal, an ecumenical pastoral and counseling group, will host the second day of prayer also at 5:30 p.m. at the Church of the Resurrection along Magsaysay Avenue.

The other venues for the 5:30 p.m. prayer activity: United Methodist Church, Marcos Highway, Jan. 18; PMA Evangelical Church, Philippine Military Academy compound, Jan. 19; Lutheran Church, St. Stephen Church, Jan. 20; and Sangkabalayan Hall at the Baguio Cathedral compound, Jan. 21.

Since it culminates on Jan. 21, a Saturday, the final prayer activity, which the Catholic Church hosts, starts at 5:00 p.m.

Other participating groups include the Jesus is Lord Fellowship, Zion Christian Center and Bethesda Ministries.

Started by the Vatican and the World Council of Churches (WCC) in 1968, the Week of Prayer and Unity has since ushered in interdenominational cooperation and understanding between and among the Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox churches, and later including other Christian fellowships.

Based on this year’s scriptural theme, the goal this time is “to achieve a victory which integrates all Christians worldwide around the service of God and one’s neighbor,” said a joint statement of the Vatican and the WCC.
