By Lili Ann Abasolo

BAGUIO CITY -- One thousand participants are expected to join North Face 100, the first ultra trail marathon series in the Asia-Pacific region which will kick off here April 21-22,

Launched in 2008 and travelled through Australia, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and the Philippines, the race will start here at Camp John Hay, going to Mt. Sto. Tomas,Andolor, Philex, BalatokRoad, then to Itogon trails before going back to Camp John Hay which will also be the finish line.

Now on its 5th year,TNF 100 returns to Baguio-Benguet (venue host last 2010), the first time to repeat route, owing to the mountainous terrain, cool climate and warm hospitality which is a welcoming atmosphere to runners coming from parts of the country and worldwide.

North Face (TNF) division manager JundelLlagas, in a media forum here bared this saying it is good to “keep running and never stop exploring.”

He added the support of the local government is overwhelming that TNF organizers welcome the possibility that Baguio will serve host yearly in this marathon where participants are tasked to complete 100 km of endurance running set in various terrains.

Llagas said, they will be deploying 200 marshals and rescue and medical teams all along the entire trail to ensure safety to all runners who will participate in different categories.

There will be no age or medical requirement, although athletes should be in top physical health before engaging such strenuous outdoor activity.

Lallagas said it is also one of the reasons why organizers announced the event this early to give participants enough time to prepare themselves physically.

In 2010, there were 1200 runners represented by 11 different nationalities around the world. Last year in Camarines Sur, a runner from Kenya garnered the fastest record of 11 hours in the 100k category.

Registration points are The Travel Club SM Baguio, R.O.X. and Bratpack CJH Techno Hub.

Categories (male and female) and registration fees are as follows:100 km, solo, P3,500;50k, solo, P3,500;22k-solo, P1,000 and 11k-solo, P1,000.
