City folks mourn passing of media icon Evangelista



BAGUIO CITY – The city council approved another resolution lamenting the passing of media veteran Geronimo “Ka Gerry” Evangelista, Sr.

Evangelista, editor-in-chief of Cordillera Today joined the Creator on July 1 at the age of 84.

He was appointed acting member of the Sangguniang Panglungsod of Baguio from May 1, 1986 to Nov. 30, 1987 following the first Edsa revolution in February, 1986.

He also served as executive assistant of then Baguio Mayor Norberto De Guzman from 1964 to 1967 and an active member of the Baguio People’s Law Enforcement Board (PLEB).

He became a president of the Baguio Press Club (BPC) and the Baguio Correspondents and Broadcasters Club (BCBC) and was awarded one of the Outstanding Citizens of Baguio in 1994.

“We express deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences of the City of Baguio to the bereaved family of the late Geronimo “Ka Gerry” Evangelista, Sr.,” the city council stated.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan also condoled with Evangelista’s family when he was brought at the Sangguniang Panglungsod Session Hall July 4.

‘Ka Gerry’ was born Oct. 1, 1927 in Solano, Nueva Vizcaya and was educated in Baguio where he completed his elementary education in Lucban Elementary School and secondary education at Baguio Colleges High School.

He finished his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952 and Bachelor of Laws in 1966 at the Baguio Colleges Foundation and MBM in the University of the Philippines-Baguio in 1980.

He was known to many as a veteran journalist, a loving and caring father, a well-loved, respected and outstanding citizen, a man who stood for his principles for the good of the city not only for the present but for the future generation. – Paul Rillorta
