P.1-M reward up in La Union council bet’s slay

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union -- Political allies of a slain candidate for councilor here have put up a P100,000 reward for the arrest of his killer.

Retired Army general Tomas Dumpit Sr., chairman of the National Unity Party in La Union, said they are ready to provide the reward to any informant who could help in the arrest of the gunman of DaniloNisperos Sr.

Nisperos, 59, who was running for city councilor under Dumpit’s group, was gunned down before his family night of Feb. 24.

Nisperos did not survive the second attempt on his life by an unidentified gunman who shot him before his family here in Barangay Bangcusay.

Nisperos was playing card games with his relatives when the gunman entered their house and shot him several times, Supt. Manuel Apostol, San Fernando City Police station chief, said.

The suspect fled after the shooting.

Nisperos’ wife died in an ambush by unidentified men on a motorcycle in 2010.

Police are investigating if politics was the motive for the killing.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government has declared La Union among the “areas of special concern” in the May elections.

Several candidates have been killed since the Commission on Elections enforced the election gun ban in January.
