POLICE ROUNDUP

Cordillera police brass air support to Sagada peace zone
CAMP DANGWA, Benguet – The regional police office said they supported a resolution of Sagada, Mountain Province natives residing in Baguio who condemned the New People’s Army for “disregarding the status of Sagada as a peace zone.”

The Banga-an FidelisanTanulongMadongoPide and Aguid Association in Baguio and Suburbs in a statement urged the NPA to leave the tourist town after SPO3 Wilfred BawayanDegay was shot Feb. 2 at SitioDugo, Poblacion  while the Etag Festival was being celebrated  and in the midst of national mourning for 44 members of Special Action Force killed by Muslim separatists in Mindanao.

A police report said activities of NPAs in Sagada became more aggressive as evidenced by the several attacks they made against government forces, the latest of which was the shooting of Degay and encounter with elements of 54th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army at Pegeo, Tetep-an.

“These are clear indifference of the NPA to the clamor for peace and ceasefire. These violence signify insensitivity of the rebels to sentiments and culture of the people in Sagada that deserve public denunciation,” the report said.

The BFTAMPABS chaired by Jose Ngina reportedly initiated the resolution condemning  said shooting which was approved in Baguio City.

The association requested the PNP to accord Degay with an appropriate award for his meritorious accomplishments.

The resolution demanded more vigorous implementation of the peace zone status of Sagada.

The association also urged the local government of Sagada to forcefully assert the peace zone status by publishing an official statement and condemnation of the shooting of Degay.

They also urged enforcement of implementing rules and sanctioning mechanism pursuant to November 1988 resolution made by local officials and town folks.

The association pushed more forceful and non-discriminatory demand for armed combatants to refrain from entering Sagada, creating an ad hoc committee to investigate the shooting of Degay and other violations of the peace zone.

They urged support to northern barangays of Sagada to effectively enforce Feb. 25, 2010 agreement by identifying those who feed and provide refuge to the NPA and other armed groups and impose appropriate sanction as provided in their respective barangay resolutions.

The regional police office urged the public to join hands with the authorities in tracking down members of the NPA who carried out the attack and who are involved in any crime by providing information through social media (Twitter-@PNPCordillera or Facebook Page- PioProcor, or through the following numbers: complaint referral - 09174297628; Regional Tactical Operation Center  074-422-5515; 09175302679 and 09285591669.
