Transfer of BuCor building, inmates to N. Ecija sought

By MydsSupnad

LAOAG CITY- Partylist congressman Samuel Pagdilao (ACT-CIS) has urged  the immediate transfer of the controversial Bureau of Correction building following the confiscations of  contrabands, guns and shabu inside the well-guarded correctional for the past several days.

In a press briefing last week, Pagdilao said it is now time to move the BuCor to other place to remove once and for all the illegal activities, smuggling of drugs and other contrabands inside the well-fortified Correctional facilities in Muntinlupa.

Now running for senator under the ticket of Poe, Pagdilao was responding to a querry of newsmen if what is the best way to solve the controversy rocking the Bilibid prison being a veteran PNP general and investigator.

Earlier, there was a proposal that a new correctional facility be built  in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija.

The said facility, to house inmates from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) is expected to start soon since the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) Board has already approved the transfer of the national penitentiary from Muntinlupa City to Nueva Ecija.

The said proposed construction of a new Bilibid building has P50.18-billion budget and that a green-light was already given by the NEDA Board recently.

It was learned that the construction of the new prison facility in Fort Magsaysay, Nueva Ecija will be undertaken through a public-private partnership and that the NBP’s transfer to its new location in Palayan city is seen to be completed in the next five to seven years.

According to the Project proposal,  the planned Nueva Ecija penitentiary can accommodate 26,880 inmates from NBP and the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW).

NBP currently holds more or less 23,000 inmates.

The Bilibid prison’s maximum capacity is about 8,900 but the total number of inmates is more than 23,000, it was learned.
