La Trinidad requires masks, face shields

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – The municipal government of this capital town has required wearing of face shields to lessen transmission of Covid-19. Mayor Romeo Salda issued executive order 161 s. 2020 which  required starting Aug. 15, all persons in public areas and transport, employees of  private and government offices, bank establishments, department stores, public markets, groceries, satellite markets or talipapa, hardware, sari-sari stores, and individuals transacting businesses at the La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Post, Benguet Agri Pinoy Trading Center and other private trading areas should   wear face shields and face masks.
The mayor issued the directive following the rise of  Covid-19 positive cases in the municipality, with 46 at present out of the 89 total recorded cases in Benguet.
The use of face shields and masks considerably reduces exposure to and emission of respiratory droplets, thus the need to require the use of both protective gears, the EO stated.
According to medical experts, wearing a face mask not only curbs the spread of the coronavirus but reduces a mask wearer's risk of catching the virus by 65 percent.
Wearing a face shield reduces inhalational exposure by 96 percent in the period immediately after a cough.
The face shield also reduces surface contamination of a respirator by 97 percent.
If social distancing is observed, risk infection is reduced by 99.9%,
Salda said the added requirement will incur cost to people, but face shields add an extra layer of protection against Covid-19.  -- JDP/RMC-PIA CAR
