SAGADA, Mountain Province -- Winemaker Egbert
Dailay of this town expects local businesses to recover with revival of tourism
in the province.
Dailay’s Piitik Wines business had been thriving before the Covid pandemic which made him host local and foreign customers frequenting the town.
"This time, I am now forced to use all my resources and earnings to sustain a decent living for my family due to the Covid pandemic," Dailay said.
He added it is challenging since he is taking care of his child who has disability, thus he sidelines as tour guide.
Dailay, on June 2021, received financial assistance from the Sustainable Livelihood Program-Livelihood Assistance Grant (SLP-LAG) of the Dept. of Social Welfare and Development worth P15,000.
He used the amount to buy raw materials to re-start his wine manufacturing business in the clay house where his family resides.
"The assistance gave me another chance to pursue my winemaking passion and provide customers with types of wines that come from locally produced fruits such as blueberry, persimmon, guava and bugnay, among other local ingredients," he said.
Piitik Wines can produce approximately 12,000 bottles of assorted wines in four months.
Dailay caters to wine requirements of walk-in clients and those who prefer their wines shipped to their homes.
He recently started recycling emptied wine bottles and encouraged customers to help his wine business by bringing back emptied bottles to be filled up for the next batch of consumers.
Dailay expressed hope the gradual and safe revival of the local tourism industry will be able to help his wine business regain its pre-pandemic vibrance aside from boosting his tour guide duties.
The Piitik Wines has a wide array of aged wines ranging from newly fermented ones to those already aged.
SLP-LAG is a government recovery and rehabilitation program that helps families belonging to low-income sector who lost their income or livelihood due to community quarantine.
