Trinidad, Benguet – Two pesons died while 10 others were seriously hurt when two
vehicles fell off ravines in Tabuk City and Sablan, Benguet last week.
In Tabuk City, Kalinga, a pickup truck fell off a ravine, causing injuries to eight occupants in Sitio Ileb, Nambaran on August 3, before 6 p.m., police said Thursday.
Injured were driver Jayvee David Mangada, Santos Macasaddog, barangay (village) health worker Analiza Baldo and her one-year-old son Cymon, Lupong Tagapamayapa member Teresita Casibang, barangay nutrition scholar Mayla Tagacay, barangay health worker Monaliza Ramillosa and Pablito Diado.
The victims, all of San Francisco village in Rizal town in Kalinga, were on their way home aboard the pickup (SKW 454) after joining a team-building gathering at the Iloba Resort.
A rock fell from the hills, scaring the driver and causing the pickup to fall off the ravine.
Rescuers from the Kalinga provincial disaster risk reduction management office and Rizal town disaster team, police and fire workers responded and pulled the victims from the ravine.
The victims were brought to the Kalinga Provincial Hospital and Juan Duyan District Hospital.
In Sablan, Benguet, 15-year-old student died August 1, after a concrete mixer hit him as he was building a retaining wall here.
Investigators said the unidentified fatality, a high school student, was pinned underneath the concrete mixer, which fell around 4:30 p.m. from an elevated roadside, while unloading cement just above a worksite at Sitio Payda in Barangay Bayabas.
The victim’s two companions, also both underage, were injured after being hit by soil debris.
They were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
In Benguet’s Tuba town, vegetable porter Rynante Samson Libao, 42, died after his motorcycle fell into a canal along the Asin Road.
The police said Libao was heading home at Barangay Coplo in Sablan when he figured in the accident.
Investigators said the victim was believed to have drowned in the canal. – With a report from Vince Jacob Visaya.
