Energy generation
BAGUIO CITY – Windmills in
this summer capital and neighboring Benguet towns are being eyed to generate
energy.
Councilor Fred Bagbagen pushed a resolution requesting ACEN Corp. to construct windmills in the BLISTT (Baguio City, La Trinidad, Itogon, Sablan, Tuba, Tublay) area.
The resolution was unanimously approved by the Baguio City Council in its regular session last Jan. 9.
ACEN Corporation, formerly known as AC Energy Corporation, is the listed energy platform of the Ayala Group.
It is a renewable power generation company that operates wind, solar, and geothermal energy plants.
In his resolution, Bagbagen mentioned that ACEN is currently building over 1,000 MW of solar and wind projects in the country. Of the number, 700 MW is expected to start operations within the next 12 months.
Bagbagen said the city government should champion green infrastructure projects which aim to reduce energy consumption and lower expenses of the city and the BLISTT area in general, citing Ordinance 18-2016 (The Environment Code of the City of Baguio) and Ordinance 43-2018 which mandates the use of energy saving technologies, equipment, and devices in all government facilities.
Generation of energy from the wind can reduce environmental impacts caused by the use of fossil fuels as it does not release any carbon emission.
Bagbagen said windmills would help alleviate the supply pressure and also help the country achieve its renewable energy targets, adding that the country is targeting to increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040.
Quoting the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), he said the country may gain vast socioeconomic and environmental benefits through a more aggressive wind power development starting from 2022 to 2026 as part of a more ambitious green-led recovery from the pandemic. -Jordan G. Habbiling
