BAGUIO CITY -- As part of smart city and full digital transformation initiatives, the city government officially launched free Wi-Fi access at Baguio City Public Market on Monday,
March 27, during a Facebook Live program of the Philippine Information Agency of Baguio City.
"After four months (since the launch of PalengQR), out of the 3,900 market entrepreneurs in the public market, only 1,200 are registered in our digital payment [system]," Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong said.
Magalong said that according to the city's survey, the limited registration was because of the lack of connectivity.
"This is why free Wi-Fi access will be provided for all entrepreneurs, vendors and consumers. All they have to do is log in," Magalong added.
The project is in partnership with Project Lightning of the National Transmission Corp.
Since 2020, under
Resolution 550, signed by Magalong, city officials stated that Project
Lightning is the delivery of last-mile connectivity to households, communities,
schools, and government offices across the country, by providing gigabit-speed
broadband service over the power lanes.
Moreover, it has a
critical defense layer meant to secure against cyberattacks.
