TUGUEGARAO CITY – The Cagayan Provincial Disaster Risk
Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) has created a task force that will
monitor impact of severe drought in the province.
The formation of the El Niño task force was announced after a meeting on Thursday, May 4, led by Provincial Administrator Maria Rosario Mamba-Villaflor who represented Gov. Manuel Mamba, chairman of the PDRRMC.
Earlier, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) raised the El Niño alert status as it expects the weather phenomenon to emerge in the coming months starting May.
Villaflor said many sectors will be affected, especially the farmers, should a severe drought strike the province.
She said she is considering utilizing irrigation or looking for plants that thrive even in times of drought, and at the same time monitor the health of everyone.
"It is important that a task force will focus on the threat of El Niño so that necessary actions can be taken immediately and prevent its severe impact on the province," said Villaflor.
