By Myds Supnad

DINGRAS, Ilocos Norte- Nationalista Party Presidential candidate Manny Villar sought Wednesday justice for a slain NP bet for councilor and the wounding of seven others in a daring ambush here last Dec. 28, in San Esteban, this town.

Villar attended the wake of Lanas Barangay chairman and NP councilor bet Jo-en Diego as part of his political visit in this northernmost province in the country.

Thousands of Ilocanos headed by former Rep. Imee Marcos and former Gov. Rudy Farines welcomed the senator who is wooing votes among Ilocanos due with support from the Marcos and Farinas families, two political kingpins in the province.

Villar was also welcomed by former mayor and board member Dr. Robert Castro, now NP mayoral bet for Dingras who was part of the convoy during the ambush.

Last Dec. 28, the four-vehicle convoy of Castro and Barangay Chairman Joeffrey Ponce Saguid was on the way from a Christmas program in Barangay Bagut where Castro was guest of honor when they were suddenly blocked and fired upon by unidentified suspects.

The wounded were identified as SPO1 Cesar Sabado and Joel Rosqueta, security escort and driver of Castro, respectively; Sangguniang Bayan Member Jose Mari Genaro Albano; PO1 Joel Natividad; a certain Gaudencio Teodoro; and one Fernando Sebastian.

But Chief Supt. Constante D. Azares, PNP region 1 director, said a gunman had been arrested and police are now looking into the involvement of the arrested suspect if he was one of the gunmen who waylaid the victims.

Azares directed Sr. Supt. Benjamin Lusad, Ilocos Norte police director, to dig deeper and look into the background of the suspect.

“He ( arrested gunman) is very cooperative and we might be able to gather additional data. We are now zeroing in on the other suspects,” Lusad told this correspondent.
