Isabela mayor survives second murder attempt

ILAGAN, Isabela – A town mayor in this province cheated death for the second time after unidentified men fired at his house before dawn Wednesday.

Police said no one was hurt as Mallig Mayor Pedro Flores and his wife slept in the room of one of their children, not in the master’s bedroom which the gunmen targeted.

Police recovered four M-16 Armalite slugs at the mayor’s room on the second floor.

Just before the elections last year, unidentified men also fired at Flores’ house.

Were it not for a busted air-conditioning unit in the master’s bedroom, the mayor could be dead by now.

The gunmen targeted his room on the second floor.

Police said Flores and his wife had been sleeping for days in one of their children’s rooms on the first floor of their two-story house due to the busted air-conditioner in the master’s bedroom.

Flores said he felt “very lucky” and thankful that the “discomfort” of having a busted air-conditioner proved to be a blessing in disguise for him.

Chief Insp. Jaime Narne, Mallig police chief, said they have provided security personnel to Flores.

In the mid-1990s, the mayor of Mallig, Maximo Isidro, was gunned down although the case was never solved.
