Kalinga entrepreneurs get help from gov’t program

By Gigi Dumallig

TABUK CITY, Kalinga -- Twenty four “informal” workers in the province were recently granted assistance under the Capability Building for Livelihood Enhancement or Kabuhayan Program of the Department of Labor and Employment.

DOLE Kalinga chief Dr. Avelina Manganip said most proponents were individuals engaged in micro-entrepreneur activities here such as freelance carpentry, sidewalk vending and some in vegetable gardening who requested tools, equipments and materials to enhance their small businesses.

Manganip said the assistance was among requests made in 2009 and 2010 and funded this year.

Each beneficiary was granted P5,000 each, given in kind as per program guidelines.

She reminded the recipients that to ensure that the assistance are utilized productively, the DOLE Regional Office will later on conduct un-announced monitoring.

Tabuk City Mayor Ferdinand Tubban urged recipients to take advantage of tools and materials they received and ensure these will last long enough for the recipients to enjoy the full benefit of the program.

The city government, he said, is giving focus on employment here and abroad through skills training, livelihood, promotion of small medium entrepreneurs, scholarships and other employment generating activities such as job fairs.
