DPWH needs P40M to fix collapsed bridge in Ifugao

By Vency D. Bulayungan

LAGAWE, Ifugao -- The Department of Public Works and Highways needs P40 million to construct a new bridge to replace the Burnay bailey bridge that collapsed at the height of Typhoon Pedring and another P15M for the river control.

DPWH-Ifugao District Engineer Eugene Batalao said that it takes time to construct the said bridge, thus their office provided a temporary foot bridge made of bamboo for commuters to pass.

The said bridge can accommodate about 10 people at a time to cross to the other side of the road.

Because of this, five municipalities were isolated- Lagawe, Hingyon, Hungduan, Banaue and Mayoyao.

Residents in these areas experienced food and gasoline supplies.

Four wheel drive vehicles have to pass through the Mungayang road in Kiangan, a one way rugged alternative road to enter or get out from Lagawe and travelers complainrf of the hardship they encountered travelling the road.

The situation became worst when Typhoon Quiel hit the province again while the province was still reeling from the effects of Typhoon Pedring.

The province was under signal number three in both weather disturbances.

Meanwhile, the whole province suffered from power interruption since Typhoon Pedring battered the province.

The Ifugao Electric Coop. is hard up replacing fallen electric posts due to the damaged bridge.
Engineer Jaime Pebenito, IFELCO Manager, said electricity was restored in the capital town while there is still power interruption in adjacent towns.
