DANGWA, La Trinidad, Benguet – The war against drugs has resulted in increasing
number of casualties and arrests in North and Central Luzon last week.
In the Cordillera, even politicians and
surrenderees showed up here at the office of Chief Supt. Elmo Francis Oco
Sarona, regional police director.
Regional Cordillera police records showed
5,138 drug users and pushers surrendered since July 1-27, of which two mayors
from the provinces of Abra and Mt. Province, personally appeared before the
office of the regional director.
Police did not disclose the mayors’ names
pending investigation of their activities.
A report from the regional police office said
18 drug users and pushers were killed from tactical engagements or encounters.
Out of the 92 drug users and pushers
arrested, 39 were from Baguio City which got largest number of arrested
persons, followed by Kalinga with 17, Benguet with 14, Abra with 10 arrests,
Ifugao with five and Mt. Province with seven.
Meanwhile, out of the 3,021 regional police
personnel, none tested for use of illegal drugs.
The surrendered drug personalities will
undergo counseling and shall be signing an oath of undertaking or affidavit
stating that they will stop their illegal activities with their own relatives
and barangay officials as witnesses.
In Kalinga, at least 234 persons suspected to
be involved in the use and trade of illegal drugs recently here
surrendered to authorities.
Police 0fficer 2 Reynalyn Layugan reported 19
were suspected drug pushers while 215 are suspected users.
In Ifugao, more than 200 drug users and
pushers from the six municipalities of the province recently surrendered to
police.
A total of 250 persons voluntary surrendered
to police and local authorities from July 6 – 17, 2016 under Project Tokhang.
PNP-Ifugao director Senior Supt. Constancio
Chinayog, Jr. said Alfonso Lista
recorded the highest surrenderees with 101; followed by Lamut – 48; Lagawe –
46; Kiangan – 44; Tinoc – 6 and Hingyon -5.
In Abra,
a total of 393 drug personalities from 17 municipalities in the province
voluntarily surrendered to police this month.
One hundred eight drug users and pushers
surrendered in Bangued, 22 in Boliney, 36 in Bucay, 17 in Danglas, 9 in
Dolores, 32 in Lagangilang, 12 in Langiden, 6 in La Paz, 4 in Luba, 1 in
Penarrubia, 3 in Pidigan, 96 in Sallapadan, 9 in San Isidro, 4 in San Juan, 8
in San Quintin, 16 in Tayum and 10 in Villaviciosa.
Abra PNP is still conducting strict monitoring
in other towns like Bucloc, Daguioman, Lacub, Lagayan, Licuan-Baay, Malibcong,
Manabo, Pilar, Tineg and Tubo.
Sarona urged all 27 chiefs of police here to
double their efforts in the arrest or surrender of all known and unknown
drug personalities in Abra during his recent visit at the Abra Provincial
Police Office.
He reiterated that they will not be charged
if they surrender voluntarily. However they will undergo rigid drug testing and
submit themselves to Oplan Pagbabago of the police. – Reports from Ginalyn
