TADIAN, Mountain Province -- A total of 57 members of the New People’s Army’s Underground Mass Organization (UGMO) voluntarily surrendered and pledged allegiance to the government in a program held here in Barangay Sumadel on Oct. 28.
Municipal councilor Johnson Balaoas administered oath of allegiance to the former rebels from barangays Bantey, Batayan and Sumadel here.
Barangay officials led burning of flags of the Communist Party of the Philippines-NPA-National Democratic Front followed by signing of covenant.
Tadian police said the surrender of the 57 UGMO members was through negotiations facilitated by police officers of Mountain Province Police Provincial Office, Regional Mobile Force Battalion 15, Regional Intelligence Unit 14 and Philippine Army including local government officials.
Col. Ruben B. Andiso, Mountain Province police director, in his message, urged the community to help government in persuading those who joined the CPP-NPA-NDF to return home and lead normal lives.
