BAGUIO CITY – A Baguio Central Terminal to be built within Burnham Park, is being pushed here to ease traffic.
This, as the city government led by Mayor Benjamin Magalong works to establish parking structures in various sites to solve this summer capital’s lack of parking spaces due to numerous vehicles.
City administrator Bonifacio Dela Pena, at management committee meeting of local officials, Oct. 24, presented a proposal from a Philippine company for construction of the ‘Baguio Central Terminal’ to provide safe environment to load and unload commuters and convenient parking for local motorists and tourists.
With its target location along Harrison Road corner Lake Drive (near the skating rink), the proposed carpark building’s ground floor will house restaurants, food chains, pasalubong center, and more; second floor will have 150 parking slots for public utility jeepneys (PUJs) plying around the city; while its third to sixth floors will serve as parking areas that can accommodate up to 960 vehicles.
The project’s added attractions include alfresco type kiosks, a Baguio Cultural Center where local, national and international events can be held, and an area for a city library.
The proposed Baguio Central Terminal intends to promote local tourism and boost the city’s economy.
Dela Pena said the proposal will go through appropriate government procedures as the city government continues to welcome more project proposals in its aim at formulating solutions to the city’s parking woes.
Earlier, the Mayor disclosed the city currently only has around 2,700 available public parking slots with a backlog of more than 11,000 slots in the short-term.
He added in the next three years, the city needs to open up between 14,000 to 20,000 new parking spaces based on the local government’s study.
