BONTOC,Mountain Province – The summer jobs offered under the Special Program for the Employment of Students of the Department of Labor and Employment has benefitted some 505 students.
They are now employed in various local government units in the province, said Miguela Limmayog, who heads the Provincial DOLE office.
Those who avail themselves of the SPES program will be given a daily wage, depending on the office to which they are assigned.
Under the program, 60 percent of their daily wage will be paid by the employer in cash while the remaining 40 percent will be paid by the DOLE in the form of education vouchers.
The provincial government, which gives a daily wage of P207.91, employed the most number with 300 students distributed to the ten different municipalities of the province.
Students employed on a 20- to 30-day contract in various local government units each get a daily wage of P173.27.
Despite being financially constrained, the provincial and municipal governments were able to allocate funds to provide their respective 60 percent counterparts for the employment program so that they will be able to hire the services of the students who are in need of income to sustain their desire to have a decent education.
