Buses collide in LaUnion; 2 die, 12 hurt

BANGAR, La Union – Two people were killed and 12 others wounded when two speeding passenger buses collided head-on at an accident-prone curve on the national highway in Barangay Maria Cristina West, here afternoon of May 9.

Senior Insp. Wilfredo Millares, chief of the Bangar Municipal Police Station, identified the fatalities as Carmelita Giang, an employee of the University of the Philippines College Baguio and a certain Editha Oblero, of Santol, La Union.

Millares identified the buses involved as the 3H Bus Line unit, driven by a certain Virgilio Ekharas of New Lucban, Baguio City, and a Sta. Lucia bus, driven by one Raymond Habonillo of Meycauayan City, Bulacan.

Initial investigation showed that it was the north-bound Sta. Lucia bus that erred when it veered to the other lane as it engaged the curb.

Due to the strong impact of the collision, two passengers were killed on the spot from multiple head and body injuries.

Concerned citizens took the injured to the Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, Habonillo has been detained at the Bangar Municipal Jail, pending the filing of charges of reckless imprudence resulting in double homicide and multiple physical injuries.
